Message of President
Katsuhide Motoki (2022-)

Greetings
Welcome to the Japan Film Directors Association homepage. My name is Katsuhide Motoki, and I was elected chairman on June 2022, 6.
The Japan Film Directors Association was founded on March 1936, 11, at Tokyo Kaikan in Marunouchi, by 3 of Japan's leading film directors at the time. This was right after the February 1 incident.
The ``founding prospectus'' states that its purpose is to ``improve the enrichment of Japanese film art, contribute to the improvement of the character and social status of filmmakers in general, and, at the same time, establish a corporate form for the film business, and We aim to contribute to Japanese culture by contributing to industrial development." After 87 years, we have overcome various hardships, and this spirit has been passed down to the present day as Japan's only cooperative for people who make a living as film directors. As the times have changed, our business has become increasingly diverse, and now the title "director" is used not only for theatrical films, but also for all kinds of video works, including dramas, documentaries, animations, commercials, and PVs that are broadcast on TV or distributed online. The creator who will be created is called a "film director." As of July 2022, there are 7 people, most of whom are self-employed, but some directors are under contract with video production companies and production companies, and everyone works together in a flat relationship regardless of their thoughts, beliefs, or affiliations. , runs an association.
The philosophy of our movement is the freedom of expression for directors and the establishment and protection of copyright and moral rights of authors. Although movie directors are recognized as authors under current copyright law, they do not hold copyrights according to Article 29 of the Copyright Law. In order to rectify this contradiction, efforts have been underway for more than half a century to revise the law by appealing to the government, stakeholders from film and video organizations, and international copyright organizations. A ``film director'' is a leader who brings together a large number of staff and cast members to work towards a single expression, shouldering a large amount of capital and is always held accountable for the results. While exposed to the lonely competition of risking their professional life with each work, there is no guarantee of their status. I was once ridiculed by a senior colleague at a film studio who told me, ``If you become a director, you'll have to live a life of haze,'' but I hope that at least the many talented people who will come after me will have the financial equity to pursue their dreams and aspirations. I am working hard. I believe that this movement will ultimately lead to the sustainable development of Japanese film and video culture.
The film and video industry is currently undergoing a period of major change. It is natural to eliminate all forms of violence and harassment at all production sites, and we must seriously examine the numerous factors that have led to this and make concrete improvements. Since 2019, we have been participating in the formulation of guidelines for the optimization of film production sites, an initiative undertaken by various film and video organizations such as the Japan Film Producers Federation and the Japan Federation of Eisakushoren, and we will continue to actively work to ensure that this initiative is effective. I will be involved in this. Within our association, we have been holding repeated discussions on these issues in order to reform the values and consciousness that have been accepted up until now. We will work hard to help more directors who will lead the next generation work together as "comrades" and leverage their strengths to build a bright future for the industry.
I would like to close my remarks by asking for your continued support, guidance, and encouragement.
Auspicious day of July 2022 Katsuhide Motoki, Chairman of the Japan Film Directors Association
