About the Directors Guild of JAPAN
The Directors Guild of Japan plays an active role in establishing
And supporting freedom of expression, raising social awareness,
expanding rights, and improving the conditions of the filming environment, which leads improved development of Japanese films.
Film directors in Japan are not "copyright holders." The Directors Guild of Japan promotes the movement for the change of copyright laws in order to have directors copyright holders. The Directors Guild of Japan negotiate and makes agreements with other groups and
Organizations regarding minimum direction fees for theatrical films and TV dramas, additional fees for television broadcast of theatrical
films, charges for partial usage of television programs, and secondary usage on video and DVD.
The Directors Guild of Japan confers a New Director's Award on Outstanding new directors every year.
This award widly recognized in the film industry and Japanese media.
The Directors Guild of Japan acts with directors to make better films by handling problems regarding local stuff consulting on legal issues for Guild members, and making recommendations for overseas study tours administered by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The Guild's International Committee is actively involved in the International movement to promote cultural diversity, and in promoting exchanges with foreign film directors and their organizations, and support international film festivals.
